对轮对踏面故障的检查，传统的方式一是采用静态检查，即车辆在进行定期检修时，将轮对分解后，用机械专用卡尺进行测量；二是动态检查，即由列检人员对运用中的车辆采用锤敲手摸眼看的人工作业方式进行，造成运用中的轮对踏面故障不能及时发现，漏检、误检时有发生，故国内外各科研院校正大力发展轮对踏面故障动态测量方法和装置。
